Berkeley, CA
This is a remodel of an existing 1916 residence in the flatlands of Berkeley. The residence had not been touched in over 40 years. Wall and doors were removed to open up the plan and to bring both light into the building as well as create a relationship between the interior and exterior spaces which is a continuing theme in the work of W A+D. The kitchen was totally remodeled and a small breakfast room was designed to sit adjacent to a new ipe deck. New wood windows replaced the old windows, the brick façade was cleaned up by sandblasting the brick and a new cedar rainscreen was put on the gable to keep the integrity of the original design but also give it an updated and fresh look. The back garage and gardening shed were redesigned to create a guest cottage and a shop with a new roof deck designed for the guest cottage as a way to give back the open space that was taken by the footprint of the new cottage.
