Kauai, Hawaii
This was a major remodel of an existing 3,700 sf, non-descript, primarily masonry house in Princeville, Kauai. We worked in collaboration with the owner and the local contractor, Williams Construction, to create a more modern Hawaiian retreat home.
The intent was to open up the existing plan and create a free flowing plan with a better connection to the outdoors. It is a two story house but the floors were originally not connected vertically so we cut a large square in the main floor and inserted a steel spiral staircase in order to connect the two floors.
The kitchen was originally somewhat removed from the main socializing space so we made it the center of the entertaining area with its focus not only on the living area in front of it but the view that can be seen through the large new glass slider doors that open up to the incredible Hawaiian view beyond.
The exterior was cold and nondescript so we added wood siding and new windows throughout to make the exterior feel warm and inviting.
